With a dynamic Hackathon held in Fanari, Rodopi, on July 11, the “Cooperation Development” program came to a close. This initiative aimed to cultivate collaborative entrepreneurship and build a vibrant ecosystem of social innovation in the rural and coastal areas of Rodopi.

The Hackathon was the culmination of a series of workshops, events, and participatory actions that brought together professionals, residents, cooperatives, and institutions. Their shared goal was to map local challenges, highlight local knowledge, and co-create ideas focused on the sustainable development of the Thracian Gulf and its lagoons.

The Ideas That Emerged

Six teams participated in the Hackathon, working intensively with the support of mentors and professionals to develop practical proposals in the fields of sustainable fishing, ecotourism, and blue entrepreneurship:

  • Vistonida Ecotourism Center
A modern information and observation hub, serving as a reference point for promoting the Nestos–Vistonida–Rodopi National Park and the surrounding area.
  • Thracian Fishing Trips with Kostas’ Boat
An authentic fishing tourism experience that immerses visitors in local maritime traditions and the daily life of fishermen.
  • Flavors from the Vistonikos Gulf of the Ancient Thracians
A gastronomic concept connecting local food production with Thracian cultural heritage, creating narratives around food and place.
  • The Lagoon Cycle
An environmental education proposal featuring hands-on activities, guided tours, and interaction with lagoon communities – aimed at raising awareness and building bonds between visitors and locals.
  • Rags & Hearts Project
A social enterprise concept focused on handmade fabric souvenirs with history – promoting handicrafts, creative recycling, and a meaningful local footprint.
  • A Community for the Protection and Promotion of Rodopi’s Lagoons
A dynamic group of people collaborating to preserve the natural and cultural value of Rodopi’s lagoons, highlighting their importance for the environment, local society, and sustainable development.

And the Winner Is… Everyone – But Also One

Although all the ideas were warmly applauded and recognized by the jury, “The Lagoon Cycle” stood out for its deep connection to the local community, environmental focus, and practical implementation potential.

This team will represent Rodopi at the interregional Hackathon taking place in Karditsa in September, alongside teams from other areas involved in the broader program network.

The jury included representatives from local government, the Rodopi Development Agency, the social entrepreneurship sector, and the local community of Fanari.

What the “Cooperation Development” Program Leaves Behind

The program focused on empowering fishing and aquaculture communities, showcasing cooperative practices, and strengthening value-added processing, fishing tourism, and social innovation in the countryside.

Throughout the process, new bonds were formed, local capacities were highlighted, and the foundations for a collaborative ecosystem were laid – one that continues to grow.

Collaboration, Trust, and a Shared Vision

The Hackathon – and the program as a whole – was truly a collective experience of engagement. It served as a reminder that when people come together with belief in their place, they can envision and build a better future.

The collaboration continues.

This initiative is part of the local action “Implementation of methods and tools for developing cooperation,” under the Interterritorial Cooperation Plan “Cooperation Development,” within the local CLLD – LEADER program of Rodopi – Xanthi, under Greece’s Rural Development Program 2014–2020 (Measure 19.3).
