Elephant Talk was a youth active citizenship project created by Maghweb in collaboration with Impact Hub Labs, Polylogos, and Young Educators, funded by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) under the CERV Programme – Citizen’s Engagement and Participation strand.
The project aimed to engage young citizens across Europe in a collective, international data gathering and visualisation action against online gender-based hate speech, working closely with youth workers embedded in their local communities. Through gender-sensitive training events, national data collection initiatives, and a participatory approach to advocacy, Elephant Talk supported young people in building critical understanding and civic engagement around the systemic nature of misogynistic hate speech online.
The programme included:
- A two-part international training series for youth workers and civic educators, held in Italy and Greece, focused on gender-sensitive data collection, analysis, and storytelling for public awareness and advocacy.
- Local data collection activities in each country, engaging over 700 young people across 7 European countries, and producing a rich body of insights on how body shaming and gender-based hate speech are experienced and normalised online.
- A series of national events, including the public dissemination event in Athens, which brought together youth, educators, civil society representatives, and activists to explore the findings and co-develop ideas for collective and institutional responses.
- The project concluded with a final international event at the European Parliament in Brussels, where young participants presented the data and their shared policy recommendations to EU stakeholders.
