At Impact Hub Athens, we believe the future of tourism must be regenerative, where local communities thrive, resources are preserved, and visitors become part of the solution, not the problem.
That’s why we’re proud to support the Santorini demo site, a bold initiative by VERNE, turning one of Greece’s most iconic yet water-scarce islands into a prototype for sustainable, circular tourism.
The Challenge:
Santorini faces extreme pressure from tourism, accounting for 90% of its GDP while struggling with severe water and resource scarcity. But instead of backing away, we’re leaning in.
The Transformation in Motion:
- Rainwater harvesting & smart storage systems
- Constructed wetlands to treat wastewater naturally
- 400m³ of clean water yearly for local irrigation
- Electric vehicles replacing fossil-fuel transport
The Results We’re Aiming For:
- 10% resource import reduction during the project
- 30% within 3 years
- Up to 60% reduction in 5 years
Through this work, we’re not only building a resilient local ecosystem, we’re crafting a replicable model for other water-scarce destinations across Europe and the Mediterranean.
Santorini is becoming a beacon of circular innovation.
Let’s build a new narrative for tourism. Join our journey.
